Fill : Robin the robin (part 6)
Dick took the offered cup of tea gratefully. Martha sat down beside Kon and both waited for the older man to speak. Dick was silent as he sipped at his tea.

"You said something about your brother being missing?"

"Neither Tim or Bruce have checked in for … too long." The setting sun painted the kitchen ruddy yellow. "I wouldn't be so worried it if was just Bruce, but Tim never misses a check in by this much. I thought, maybe, Superboy might have seen him."

Kon shook his head and tried to ignore the way his heart-rate sped up. Tim hadn't been around for a lot longer than Dick was letting on. "I haven't seen him in weeks. Not since before-"

He was interrupted by two flying balls of feathers speeding into the room and chasing each other around it. Robin darted towards the table first and barely avoided Jay's talons by swerving behind Dick's head. He chirped angrily at the larger bird as it chased after him with a screech.

Out in the yard, Krypto started barking.

Unused to the situation, Dick gave a surprised shout and leapt to his feet, only to narrowly miss being smacked in the face by Batty's wing as the giant bat dove towards the two birds. "What the hell?"

Batty ignored him and flew around around the kitchen, inadvertently chasing the two birds, screeching and hissing the whole time.

"CONNER KENT! I thought you fixed that screen door!" Martha tossed him a dish towel and another to Dick. "Be a dear and catch Jay - he's the blue jay."

Dick nodded and fairly quickly had the irate blue jay wrapped in the dish towel and held tight in his hands. Kon had a bit more trouble catching Batty, but with liberal used of his telekinesis soon he too was holding an irate animal wrapped in a dish towel. Once the other two were caught, Martha whistled and held out her hand. "Robin, come here."

The robin chirped from his perch on the faucet, then peeped again when he alighted on Martha's fingers. She clamped her thumb down over the bird's feet and looked at Kon and Dick. "That was exciting."

"Uh … yeah." Dick looked a little stunned.

Martha turned a fierce glare on Jay. "So when you finally manage to get better, the first thing you do is chase poor Robin?" Jay have a disgruntled caw. "He's been nothing but nice to you. Shame on you."

In Kon's hands, Batty hissed again. Robin peeped hesitantly.

Martha shook her head and held up a hand to forestall Dick's questions. "Later. Clark just broke the sound barrier."

Moments later Clark's head poked through the open door. "Is everyone alright?"

Even expecting it, they all jumped. Robin flitted away from Martha for a moment before resettling himself, while Jay and Batty screeched in annoyance as Dick and Kon's hands tightened in surprise. Dick shook his head. "What are you talking about?"

"We've been monitoring you since Robin and Batman disappeared." Clark looked anxious. "Your heart-rate just spiked alarmingly."

"I was just surprised."

"By what?"

Dick held up the blue jay and nodded to the bat in Kon's hands. "These two."

The robin chirped cheerfully as Clark peered first at Jay and then at Batty. Jay stared back without blinking, but Batty hissed repeatedly. Finally Clark turned to look at Martha. "I didn't think there were bats around here."

"Really?" Dick looked down at the bat. "We've got those all over Gotham. Especially in the Cave."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Alfred hates them."

Martha frowned at the bat, then at the bird in her hand. Robin chirped as Clark began questioning Kon as to the appearance of the bat. She stepped around the table and looked at the small bird a bit closer in the fading sunlight. "You're a rather smart birdie, aren't you, Robin?"
