(micro)Fill: Flying True
It’s natural, when it happens. They’re all standing in the middle of a field, eyes glued to the targets in front of them. Never let it be said that they Arrows weren’t competitive. 6 targets with 20 arrows embedded within them. None of them more than an inch from any given bull’s-eye. Five arrows with fletching in five different colors are in the center target. And one throwing axe, because even retired Roy can’t stand being a one-trick pony.

Of course, they’re not ACTUALLY keeping score. But that doesn’t stop them from grinning like idiots, eyes bright and challenging each time an arrow lands with a solid thump directly in the middle of the miniscule moving targets.

Then Lian’s bow string breaks. She gives a cry of shock as it does, then swears. Both Oliver and Roy give her a sharp look. Lian rolls her eyes and swears again, for good measure. Mia laughs in appreciation, and gets an angry glance from Roy, which makes Lian dissolve into giggles. Mia takes a deep breath, chooses the smallest target, presses the remote that starts it moving and lets one last arrow fly. It lands a centimeter to the left of the target, quivering there.

“Here kid,” Mia says quietly, dropping her arm. “My arm is getting tired anyway.”

Lian looks at her for a long moment, then nods. She takes the bow reverently. It’s not a bow for practice. Mia long ago started feeling like she was cheating on the weapon if she used any other bow than the one she’s used to save the city and its citizens almost countless times. She pulls the string once, then again, eyes glued on the target but every sense on the specific pull and weight it takes to bring the string back on that particular bow. She picks up her final arrow and nocks it. Mia watches her, the concentration and the perfect posture. Lian has grown up into a beautiful women. Probably why Roy can’t take his eyes off of her as she takes aim, eyes shining in pride. Connor, however, is watching Mia. He’s guessed. She shakes her head once and he drops his gaze with a tiny nod. Ollie drops to the ground, and they’re all watching Lian as she turns and chooses the same target Mia just had.

She takes a deep breath, shifts her grip almost imperceptibly and lets her last arrow fly, following through and holding her position.

The arrow flies, and Mia tracks it. She knows where it will land before it does. The solid sound echoes in the sudden quiet. The arrow is deep in the center of the target. Directly. Roy grins the grin of a prideful father, and Lian lets her hand drop, grinning the grin of someone pleased with her own performance. She runs her hand over Mia’s – Speedy’s – bow once, then turns back to Mia with a giant grin and holds it out with both hands. “Thank you, Mia!”

Mia reaches out with one hand, in the center of the bow, grasping where she’s held it thousands of times. She glances at Ollie, at Roy, and at Connor, all those that have gone before. Then, slowly, she lets go, leaving the bow in Lian’s hands.

Re: (micro)Fill: Flying True
Oh, this kind of made me tear up a little, because there's so much feeling there, such love and ceremony and they're such a family. Gorgeous fill, anon.

Re: (micro)Fill: Flying True
Lian deserved so much more than Cry for Justice, and both girls deserved better than to be erased without a second glance, so there was no way I could write this impersonally. :(
